Today, we’ll head to the Sundial Bridge, a stunning work of art. After that, we’ll make our way to the iconic Shasta Dam, California’s most famous dam. Prepare to be amazed—it’s often called one of the greatest engineering marvels of all time!

Itinerary:
San Francisco → Sundial Bridge → Shasta Dam → Klamath Falls
——————————
Sundial Bridge
The Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay is a renowned pedestrian bridge and public art installation spanning the Sacramento River in Redding, linking the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. True to its name, the bridge functions as a working sundial, one of the largest in the world. Its shadow traces such a vast arc that it can only tell time between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., covering just four hours of the day.
——————————
Shasta Dam
Completed in 1945 on the Sacramento River, Shasta Dam stands as one of the largest dams in the U.S., surpassed only by Hoover and Grand Coulee. Its sheer size is awe-inspiring, but it’s the stunning location in the southern Cascades that truly takes your breath away. Rising 602 feet, this curved concrete gravity dam holds back the vast, vibrant waters of Lake Shasta. With a 365-mile shoreline, the lake is framed by lush evergreen hills and the towering, snow-capped peak of Mount Shasta, creating a picturesque and dramatic landscape.

Special Note:
If Crater Lake National Park is closed, it will be replaced by Sea Lion Cave and Thor’s Well.

Crater Lake National Park
Upon arrival, we’ll be greeted by the breathtaking sight of the deepest lake in the United States. This stunning natural wonder was formed around 7,700 years ago when the ancient volcano Mount Mazama collapsed following a massive eruption. Stretching 6 miles in length and 4 miles in width, the lake plunges to an impressive depth of 1,932 feet.

or Sea Lion Cave
Sea Lion Caves is a network of sea caves and caverns along the Oregon coast, open to the Pacific Ocean. Recognized as one of the world’s great sea grottos, it’s often compared in size and color to the famous Blue Grotto of the Mediterranean. As the largest sea cave in America, it’s a truly wild and awe-inspiring natural wonder.
——————————
Thor’s Well
Perched on the edge of the Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua, a vast, seemingly bottomless sinkhole swallows the relentless surge of seawater around it. Known as Thor’s Well, this mesmerizing natural wonder is so mysterious, some believe it could be a portal to another world.

Redwood National and State Parks
While most people know Redwood as the home of the tallest trees on Earth, the Parks also preserve expansive prairies, oak woodlands, wild rivers, and 40 miles of rugged coastline. Our recommended scenic drives—winding through ancient forests, dramatic coastlines, upland prairies, and oak-dotted landscapes—will leave you already dreaming of your next visit.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the largest of California’s redwood parks, stretches along the scenic Eel River and is home to the 10,000-acre Rockefeller Forest—where several of the world’s tallest trees stand. Easily accessible via the Avenue of the Giants, the park’s Visitor Center near Weott features exhibits on local nature, wildlife, and history. The park also offers a variety of campsites across diverse landscapes, along with breathtaking redwood groves and scenic hiking trails. Be sure to visit Founders’ Grove, a highlight of the park dedicated to the Save-the-Redwoods League.

Founders Grove
As we stroll along the forest trail, we’ll be surrounded by ancient redwood trees, some over a thousand years old. The towering coastal redwoods create an awe-inspiring atmosphere, a true marvel of nature that invites you to pause and take it all in. Next, we’ll hike the Shenmu Trail, the perfect place to breathe deeply and fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the natural world.

Drive-Thru Tree Park
What California icon is 2,400 years old and sees cars pass through it every summer day? If you guessed the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree in Leggett—about an hour north of Willits and three hours from the San Francisco Bay Area—you’re a true redwood enthusiast. For over 80 years, road-trippers have snapped photos of their vehicles squeezing through the tree’s tunnel, carved into its massive trunk in 1937. The opening measures six feet wide and seven feet tall, making it a one-of-a-kind roadside attraction.
——————————
Napa Valley
Napa Valley is undeniably one of the most renowned wine regions in the world. During our visit, we’ll stop at the iconic Sutter Home Chateau, where you’ll enjoy a tasting of five distinctive wines: White Zinfandel, Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel, Moscato, and Zinfandel Port.
